Earlier in Luke 5, the Pharisees have just gotten a little upset at Jesus for spending time with tax collectors and sinners. Jesus knew that the Pharisees were totally missing the point. Remember the word Christ used for "law" there is "nomos" and by your own witness that means the "Law of Moses. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. The scribes and the Pharisees interrupt Jesus teaching, like a tornado on a pleasant day, to ask him a legal question. And yet the Pharisees were, to some extent, well-meaning people. Its a weird mindselt, but seems common among a certain group of people. The Pharisees had burdened the Sabbath with a multitude of detailed observances that were not laid down in the Mosaic Law. “Fast”: The twice-a-week fast was a major expression of Orthodox Judaism during Jesus’ day ( Luke 18:9-14 ). 40 Foolish ones! Did not He who made the outside make the inside also? 41 But rather give alms of such things as you have; then indeed all things are clean to you. from a group of scribes and sages who harkened back to the days of the prophet Ezra and the Great Assembly. In short, the Pharisees selectively used the letter of the law to justify flouting the principle of the law. As was discussed in an earlier study, Matthew 15:1-20 and Mark 7:1-23 are the sections accusing the Pharisees teaching man-made law, and they are the only parts of the Gospels to do so. Better to state the question in a way that would not unnecessarily offend them.
